One of our great passions is art. My wife Judy and I have been collecting art for many years, and have a wide collection of different pieces from African to Modern and other eras, and includes furniture, weavings, paintings, bronzes and other creations. We are fascinated by the limitlessness of the human creative spirit! One of those amazing talents that we have enjoyed is artist Paul Ygartua, see him here: www.ygartua.com He is among other things, a mural artist that is unequalled on the world stage today. Imagine painting a face that is 10 or more feet high! Then imagine painting 31 of them, that is exactly what he is doing now at the Beachcomber Hot Tub Factory in Surrey BC, some 12 years after completing the original work of art. Back then, Judy and I wanted to wrap our factory in art, not just for us, but for our community, and to share it with the world to celebrate our worldwide launch. Since then, we have expanded into over 40 countries around the world. We have 31 of the most famous faces in our recent history on our Factory Wall, celebrating the Legends of our time, from John F Kennedy to Wayne Gretzky to Terry Fox and many others. Who better to paint this than Paul! You can read about his many accolades on his website. We’ll keep you posted as to Paul’s progress with this amazing work of art.

Beachcomber releases a new brochure

The newest piece of literature that has rolled off the presses at Beachcomber hit the streets this month. It is called ‘Beachcomber SLB 75’, and features this new hot tub model. Now completing the 15^th model that Beachcomber offers, the SLB turned heads when it was launched to our store network this past January. Beachcomber Marketing Services had fun creating this newest piece, with an innovative fold process called an ‘accordian fold’, featuring one piece of paper almost 40 inches / 102 cm long, with five folds to have it fold down to a square of 6.5 inches / 16.5 cm. And as always we insist on vegetable based inks, and recycled paper for the printed brochures we do make. The creative process is endless, and Beachcomber Marketing pushes the envelope with creativity in print, just like the real hot tub product. Featuring all new photos taken by Beachcomber’s in house marketing team, the SLB 75 brochure is a complement to the real product which stands on its own as a work of art! Hello Keith,

I just thought I would drop you a quick note to tell you a little ‘winter’ story about my hot tub. As I awoke one morning last winter to get ready for work I went to start out my normal routine, arise about 6am and put on my beachcomber robe, hit the bathroom and get the sleep out of my eyes then head out to my hot tub (currently a 2008 750E) for a soak. As I passed through the kitchen I heard on the radio that we keep on in there the following: “And now for the weather…expected high to day of -31 and with the wind chill it feels like -47. Current conditions in the Saskatoon area are at a bonechilling minus 36 with wind chill dipping to a balmy -52, the following buses are not running today (list of about 15) and the following schools are closed (list of about 10) Then I went and turned on the TV in our bedroom and watched some of the morning news where a reporter did an experiment with a cup of water, she brought the cup out of her vehicle filled it with water then threw it up into the air….. it began to freeze before it even hit the ground!! I must say I contemplated my usual routine at that point!

Now with not only my Beachcomber robe on but also a toque, I ventured out to see if I had a huge block of ice for a hot tub. After my sprint out the door, down the two flights of steps and across my deck I was ecstatic to find that when I peeled back the ice sealed cover my display read 104 just like it had the day before!

It didn’t take me long to jump in and find the deepest corner seat and get neck deep in the hot soothing water which at -52 felt like I was boiling!! After my half hour soak I braved the wind and cold one more time to stand up and put on my robe, I felt a bit warmer at that point but not too much, my tub on the other hand had only dropped 2 degrees despite the -52 degree deep freeze environment it was housed in!!

For all those doubters of full foam insulation being important, please share this story with them!!

Great Service From Great People

Just wanted to send my appreciation for the AWESOME support I received from Stan Hughes on 7/21.

I was battling a 2 month old intermittent problem with my Beachcomber that was driving me mad (FLO Error). Every time I wanted to relax in the hot tub, the FLO error would be showing and the water temperature to low to use. Anything but relaxing.

Thought I was going to pay a couple hundred dollars for some local no brand guy to come out and sell me a pump for $500.

Found the manual on line – called your distribution center by accident – she was very nice and gave me the correct number to Technical Support.

Got Stan when I called, he walked me through a straight forward, fairly technical, troubleshooting process and we cleared up the problem in 30 minutes.

Sill working great this afternoon, and expect we fixed my problem. I might need to replace a $50 switch in the future.

This is one of the few times in the last 5 years I’ve called a company for support and had such an excellent experience. I work in the service organization of my company, and I know you never hear the good stuff when it comes to service. I appreciated the professional and expert help Stan provide.

Keep up the great work. If anyone ever asks me for a tub recommendation it will be you guys based on this experience.

IMPORTANT ENERGY INFORMATION

Faced with electrical blackouts from appliances overusing the electrical grid, in 2008, the state of California notified the Hot tub industry that energy guzzling hot tubs or spas models would not be allowed to be sold within their state. Manufacturers were asked to pay for their own tests and voluntarily send in their small, medium and large models to the California Polytechnic University to undergo independent energy testing under the new industry required standards. All 3 size models that Beachcomber sent in passed, and as of June 2010, only twenty-six percent of North American hot tub/spa manufacturers had successfully passed this rigorous testing. As the testing results became public it was found that Beachcomber had not only passed all fifteen models we produce, but we have the single lowest energy consumption of the entire industry on the hot tub/spas tested. The testing results enabled us to determine average usage costs for all hot tub/spa being used; the tests operated every other day for one half hour with the high speed massage on for half the time. We have achieved these levels of energy conservation with the use of state of the art hydraulic water flow systems, in our Energy Saver Management System (ESMS) and one of the most scientifically proven R rating insulation products available with a 4Wall option installation.

Like any other twenty–first century appliance we have a moral responsibility to conserve our earth’s energy resources without sacrificing the maximum in health and recreational benefits. More Jets Are Not Better!

Q: What about more jets? Do more jet holes drilled in a hot tub make it worth more money?

Keith: Definitely not! Many manufacturers drill as many jets as they think they need to sell the hot tub to the uneducated buyer. The more jet holes they drill into their hot tubs means the more motors and energy guzzling horsepower is required. This is dead against the findings of the latest independent research studies5 on improving hot tub energy use, construction and quality. Some customers are led to believe that more jets and motors mean it’s worth more money. This is not true. The fact is that the more holes drilled, the weaker the hot tub wall and structure becomes. Beachcomber engineered all 16 of our hot tub price levels with the ability to customize the number of jets you want, along with the type of jet massage you need for customized therapy at no extra cost.

1. Their poor quality of product and limited warranties from their top of the line to their lowest prices

2. With the hot tub prospects having such little knowledge, our competitors misrepresent the price discounts savings to them (inflating their retail price implying a big sale saving at the time of purchase)

3. As bothersome to me, with the little customer knowledge, our competitors put useless options on their spas like synthetic molded pillows, ozonators, little or no insulation, jet holes all throughout their spas, multi motors/pumps that guzzle energy. These are some of my top pet peeves and I believe should not be built into any hot tub/spa. Another key one is adding a TV; it is just terrible for a spa!

Keith: While conducting the testing of hot tub/spa monthly total electrical operational costs the independent industry studies also noted the ‘Design Life’ spans or the number of years before you would have to throw your hot tub away. The study noted that the life span of hot tubs is mostly rated to quality and its cost. Beachcomber was shocked to learn that they stated that most spas would last only 5 years while other higher priced spa company’s product lasted an average of 10 years. Why You Shouldn't Have Built In Pillows in Your Hot Tub

Q: Is installing permanent pillows or molding them directly into a spa a good method of manufacturing?

Keith: No. I don’t recommend buying a spa or hot tub with pillows molded right into the lip of the hot tub shell. Customers have told me that one of the biggest problems with this method of construction is that these synthetic pillows stain, absorb bacteria, smell and become unsanitary and will have to be thrown away. Why would you install synthetic pillows that are not only unpleasant but also very expensive to replace? As an alternative, Beachcomber has developed comfortable contoured neck recesses without plastic pillows that will last the life of your Beachcomber.

More Motors and Larger Motors Cost You More Money

Keith: No, in fact it is the opposite. I regularly work with our engineers to look for ways to reduce the number of motors and horsepower. The more motors and pumps you have in a hot tub/spa just cost you more in service and energy bills. We use reverse engineering to direct available horsepower effectively so that each jetting location delivers just the right power for the best jetting massage. When you lower horsepower or remove motors you use less energy and thus pay less to operate your hot tub.

Keith: People suggesting this is nonsense! I have been making hot tubs since 1978 and started this Eco4WALL insulation construction method in 1983. Beachcomber has been selling this type of construction with the equipment cab forwarded under the access step in the coldest Canadian climates to the hot deserts of Dubai with outstanding results. It’s common sense construction, just like the finest architecturally designed commercial buildings. They have all their mechanical equipment on the roof outside, on top of the building. Maximizing foam insulation in all 4 walls of the hot tub shell cavity with a properly sealed hot tub cover is the number one method to reduce operating costs and has been proven by independent testing. Keith: Many salespeople recommend salt water for hot tubs without knowing the ramifications of using this highly corrosive mineral. In fact, many municipalities are now banning the use of salt systems; it becomes an environmental pollutant when flushed into storm drains from hot tubs. And to make matters worse, salt quickly deteriorates hot tub equipment, fixtures and often surrounding environments like decks and railings. Special mechanical units that generate the chlorine for this system have no way to regulate their output into hot tub water; and they will require cleaning and replacement because of the scale and corrosion that salt naturally brings. Keith: In the late 70’s, we used to make hot tubs with little or no insulation. But since 1983, Beachcomber has said that filling in every bit of the cavity below the hot tub/spa shell with sprayed foam insulation is the proper construction method. This produces the lowest energy operation cost. Spa competitors have said “Beachcomber is wrong with using 100% foam fill” until the fall of 2008 when independent testing laboratories confirmed that maximizing insulation under the shell and the cover sealed to the shell is the number one way to reduce energy costs on a hot tub. I have always asked “would you buy a house from a contractor that said he was not insulating the walls of your house because you will save money, and just in case the plumbing leaks, you can fix it?”

Keith: No, an ozonator does not disinfect, treat or clean hot tub water at all; I will not personally recommend ozone. It is an oxidizer only and generates a strong gas that is released directly into your hot tub water for an oxidization process. Releasing a harmful gas like this directly into your hot tub bothers me – it’s not safe. Natural, clean water is a very important part of our service to Beachcomber customers after they install their new hot tub. We recommend a easy, clean, simple and as a natural a process as possible.

Today, we're starting a series of common questions that I get asked on a regular basis. These are the questions that I hear from my friends and customers related to our hot tubs, and how to use them.

Q: Is there a big difference between a 33”/84 cm and/or a 29”/74 cm deep hot tub compared to a 36”/91 cm one?

Keith: Yes. The deeper hot tub gives you more comfort, especially for your feet and abdomen. The 3 to 7 inches in knee room lets you stretch out better and be much more comfortable. Shorter depths of hot tubs are usually less comfortable and sell at lower retail costs.

Eagles in the City

I thought it important to share with you the kick off event of Eagles in the City in Vancouver. There are going to be hundreds of Eagles placed around the city of Vancouver to beautify the city and raise money to support kids with disabilities. They have found that this is a very successful way to raise money for children who need help. Lyndon and Blake represented Beachcomber Hot Tubs in ‘Vancouver’s new convention center’ which you can see through a couple of shots showing Vancouver.

Question: What is all the talk about Title 20 in the hot tub industry over the last year initiated by California State Government?

Answer: The California government’s new stringent energy standards required all hot tub manufacturers to test each of their hot tubs to ensure they met approved home energy usage. We recently sent three of our hot tubs to be tested for the new standard “Title 20” that is being enforced by government this year. Cal Poly, an independent testing laboratory facility, used the most stringent level of testing to perform the tests to verify energy usage. We were apprehensive about sending all 3 of our Beachcomber Hot Tubs, a large, medium and small hot tub, to verify the truths about our energy performance as it was a first. We thought that every spa company would also want to know how what their true hot tub energy usages were at this time. But, only a total of 23 hot tubs were sent to Cal Poly by a handful of manufacturers, instead of the over 200 units we expected had every spa company participated in the independent laboratory tests. Out of the twenty-three tested, only nine hot tubs passed this testing. We are proud to say that all three of our hot tubs passed, that is “three” out of the nine that passed were Beachcomber hot tubs. We have never compromised our commitment to lower energy costs or on our quality.
One of Beachcomber’s key industry positions has always been “low cost energy usage” so we are now going to take that a step further ahead of the spa industry. With this new testing knowledge, Beachcomber has launched the new Beachcomber Hybrid Edition Hot Tub through our retail stores. Our focus on energy and testing brings other ideas within our R & D research team to make more improvements to our Beachcomber Hot Tubs, so that our hot tub customers can save even more energy and further reduce their operational and maintenance costs.

Dear Keith and Judy,

A pleasure, a blast and most definitely a learning experience-that is how to best describe the chance that I have been given by being part of the Beachcomber Family.

I thank you for that and so much more. You have watched me grow and most definitely shrink. I have been what Liz has called “director of first impressions” before moving onto parent and partner for our dealers. I have to admit that it has been a great time every step of the way. My knowledge, strength and confidence forever expanding. Thank you.

On August 29th, I begin another chapter of my life that I feel will be one of my most important decisions. Andy and I have decided together that my being at home for Lexie, would not only be a perfect chance for us all to bond even closer as a family, but also a great chance for the future we all hope for.

Bringing family and friends together---that is what we are really all about.

All the best with your new little one and enjoy—life really is just too damn short for all that is out there.

First I am honored you would ask me for my input on this important purchase of a Beachcomber.

I think one of the main reasons to buy anything starts with “Trust.” Beachcomber is the only manufacturer in the world that does not have a limited warranty versus our Beachcomber Guarantee, our guarantee protects the retail customer not like all the other manufacturers with a limited warranty that has exclusions, disclaimers, etc. I think every manufacturer should have the “trust” in their hot tubs to give retail customers a guarantee as strong as Beachcomber.
